During our recent webinar, Mary asked a question that made me think about how to turn back the clock on your body – 20 years later. Mary’s concern is that she “would like to get back to the weight I was at when I quit smoking; that was 20 years ago and I work out.”
I can certainly empathize with you Mary about our bodies and weight control and fitness. Would you believe that I used to weigh 240 pounds at one point? Yes it is true. Thankfully, I found some great mentors along the way who taught me how to be healthier and more fit. But that alone was not enough.
You Need The Desire to Be
You need the desire to be ____________. You can fill in the blank with words such as:
- More Fit
- Look Better
- Feel Better
- More Flexible
- More Athletic
I think the top reasons why people fall down in transforming their bodies is that they take a “spot reduction” approach. People often say, I just want a smaller or bigger… Then they go out to work at making that one item smaller, bigger, tighter, stronger, etc.

Your body has many different parts, but for simplicity think about your fitness or weight management/loss in three areas:

Those three areas are the key to making a comprehensive transformation program happen for you.
Starting Your Body Transformation
Mary – first of all, many people want to turn back the clock 20 years on their body. And guess what… it’s possible for you.
First, I recommend you schedule a thorough check-in with your physician, dentist and a nutritionist to rule out any medical issues that may be halting your progress. These three professionals can identify issues you may need to rectify first.
So, once you have done that and are cleared to hit the gym and start your transformation, I have assembled a quick list of items that require your daily focus below.
What’s on the End of Your Fork?
Number 1 – the old adage that the best 5 word diet is “eat less and exercise more” still holds true today. But what scientists have found is that the quality of what you eat is just as critical as the quantity of what you eat. This is where the nutritionist comes in handy.
Find a Mentor
Number 2 – The second biggest reason I believe people fail at transforming their bodies is that they don’t know how to exercise. For someone like Mary, perhaps it is time to relearn how to exercise and inject some variety into your fitness regime. I remember joining gym years ago to only leave feeling frustrated because I never knew what to do. Hiring a personal trainer is an excellent idea too. Just as in our dojo, our instructors ensure that students learn the correct form and techniques. This helps with longevity of training and a higher level of satisfaction.
Tony Horton Gets Results
In 2002 I was introduced to a guy who would forever change my life. That man was a Californian named Tony Horton. Tony is the creator of the now wildly famous P90X fitness product. Through my connection to Tony by using his programs and attending his fitness camps, I have been able to transform my body and know that I will never see the days past 200 on the scale ever again.
Smash the Plateau
Tony’s 11 Laws of Fitness are a checklist on ways you can crush the so called plateau effect. This is where we often become creatures of habit and forget to mix it up with our health and fitness.
